How to add custom maps to SMR for Mac

Download:

Adding a custom map to SMR for Mac requires finding the UserMaps folder into which you must un-zip the custom map. Sid Meier’s Railroads! must be run at least once so it may create the UserMaps folder.

Feral Interactive’s support FAQ provides instructions for finding the UserMaps folder:

Custom maps, created using the terrain editor, are stored in your Preferences folder. To find them, follow these steps:

  1. After creating and saving your map in Sid Meier’s Railroads!, exit the game.
  2. Relaunch the game by double-clicking on the Sid Meier’s Railroads! Application icon while holding the Command (⌘) key. The Sid Meier’s Railroads! pre-game Options window will appear.
  3. Select the Advanced tab and click on the Open Preferences Folder button. A new finder window will open showing the Sid Meier’s Railroads! folder contents on your computer’s hard drive.
  4. Open the UserMaps folder to view a list of folders, each containing data for one of your saved custom maps.

Once you have the UserMaps folder open you must delete any other downloaded custom maps before installing a new custom map. Maps you have created yourself with the map editor do not need to be deleted, only delete maps you have downloaded from smrsimple.

Next unzip the downloaded map into the UserMaps folder. Now launch SMR and start a new game. At the map selection screen you may have to scroll through all the maps to find your new map.

Sid Meier’s Railroads! is now out on the Mac!

Good news everyone! Today I got an email from Feral Interactive, they’ve just released SMR for Mac OS X! This is good news for any Mac gamers who’ve missed out on SMR.

Feral Interactive has a minisite with more infromation: http://www.feralinteractive.com/en/mac-games/railroads/

You can already buy the game from Amazon or directly from Feral Interactive. They’ve also ported other excellent games like Sid Meier’s Pirates! and Tropico 3.

I’ve asked Feral Interactive if custom maps are support, I’ll update this post when I get a response.

Japan

A map of Central and Western Japan. It is a 15×15 map and includes 3 of the 4 main Japanese islands of Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu. It is rescaled in a westerly direction to give more space for game play. It covers the post-war period after 1945 and requires developing an economy based on the import of raw materials from shipping ports, delivery to industries, and export of goods back to the ports. It features new rail cars, locomotives, and new industries including rice, shushi, tourists, container cars, export goods, and Yuzu citrus. It even has traditional Japanese music. It is a very challenging map for experienced players and should be played with AI.

Gone With the Wind

Gone With the Wind covers southern US over the period from 1830 to 1866, before the Civil War. It is a small 10×10 map, and uses only early steam locomotives which cannot pull many cars over long distances. There are rich markets in all regions of the map, so the starting point is not of great importance. It is intended to be played with 3 AIs with the goal of meeting all the victory objectives. It features cars, annexes and industries from Slider38’s My Old Ky Home map and Bobby Jancsika’s Maryland and Zimbabwe maps. As well as some reskinned cars and industries. The economy is roughly that of the Old South. So be prepared to transport slaves, tobacco, muskets, and rebel recruits

It is a difficult map.
