Hey Jancsika, I’m just trying this for the first time and it seems that I can’t pick up any resources (fish, oil, etc.) even though i’m delivering “people” as indicated. Am I doing something wrong?
Senna, Jancsika has passed on. Before he died he made some of my favorite maps. In this one, he set up many of the industries to require the delivery of passengers (i.e. immigrants) to produce goods. Looking at the xml files it looks like the coal mine, gold mine, fishery, dairy, cattle ranch and oil fields all require the delivery of passengers in order to produce goods. In some cases each carload of passengers delivered produces 1 or 2 carloads of resource goods. You need a lot of passengers delivered to these industries to produce all the goods needed. If I remember right most of the passengers are generated by the east coast cities. Good Luck and have Fun!!
TMiller, thank you for the news about Jancsika, I didn’t know him, having just joined this site recently, but I’m sure it was a big loss to the community. Sad indeed.
I sorted out the issues with supply/resources (as you noted). I also discovered that that certain trains will not pick up resources, which was also part of issue that i was having.
Thanks for your reply!
I’ve only just seen this very sad news about Jancsika. He’s done many of the most interesting and challenging maps and will be sadly missed
I don’t know if there is anyone on this site anymore but I rediscovered this game which I played back in the 90’s. A simple question: I can open all the maps that have a .fpk extension associated with it but not .tga.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong. I am running Windows 11 PRO 64 Bit.
Thank you
This site is still active, yes.
Slider38 still makes new maps and is an absolute legend for it.
This version of Railroads was released in 2006. Not sure if we’re on the same page regarding the version.
.fpk files are pack files. That is, they just hold all the files required in one ‘pack’, so to speak. There’s a tool called pakbuild that can extract all the files.
.tga are map files used by the Gamebryo engine for rendering the game view. But there’s not one single tga file that shows the rendered view of the map.
Hello Zimmer,
The maps are meant to be opened by Sid Meier’s Railroads. You mentioned’s the 1990s, which implies the game you are thinking of is the Original Railroad tycoon also made by Sid Meier himself. This game, Sid Meier’s Railroads is a remake Sid Meier did in 2006.
Check this page for instruction on how to add these maps to Sid Meier’s Railroads: https://smrsimple.com/2009/06/how-to-manage-custom-maps-by-hand/
You may need to buy the game from Steam if you do not already own it. The 1990s Railroad Tycoon cannot use these custom maps.
Also happy Easter, our saviour has risen!
Have fun with the maps please 🙂
Can I be so bold as to suggest purchasing the game from GoG instead. Completely stand alone version. No need to launch Steam to play it.
