OK, your request was abit easier than I thought it would be. What I have is a list of MUST HAVE maps, that is, the installers load all original and created materials into the GLOBALS. This is not to say that all other maps will not use materials from these maps, just that once these are loaded, all others 'should' work OK. The list:
Basin and Range
Chicago to the Rockies
Santa Holiday
Side to Side
Side to Side DSC
Super Bowl Express
Utah
Mid East
Middle East
America
The Island
If you find any maps with problems, post it here.

Well, you're not kidding when you say Railroads! is an unstable game. The original was unplayable, the second patch made a huge improvement, but yes, still more work to do.
Thanks for the detailed response, you've pretty much answered my main query. I don't know what GLOBALS are, or their significance, but that probably doesn't matter, I won't be developing any maps, just want to play what's there.
You asked if I used installers - I think so. These are files such as Setup_ALASKA_1.0.exe ?
The maps I've tried are;
Alaska
BC Gold
Mid East
Spain Definitive
Sod America
Valencia
..which are all in the XML\_SCENARIOS_ folder, rather than the User Maps folder. That's just where the setup files put them.
For now, I will take your advice and get all the maps you listed, turn off auto save, anti-spy/anti-virus, fiddle with the settings and see if I do any better.
Muchas gracias senores.

Oh but the GLOBALS do matter. Originally, if someone created something new for a map, you'd have to download it, and like a deck of cards, figure out where everything went and hope you got it right. The GLOBALS put everything in a few certain places, which later led to the SETUP programs which put everything where it should go without you having to understand the construction of XMLs and the graphics files needed. This allowed map makers a minimum of only 3 lines of XML code to add anything they want to their maps. Even a user can make changes with very little understanding of programing. The Middle East map I submitted is a remake of the MID EAST map you have loaded, with a couple of problem corrected (which were also corrected in the one you have) and a few other things added. YOU can take any map, original or created, and with very little simple programing, create your own world. This forum has instrctions and "instructors", and the Wiki has alot of helpful information.
And yes, the EXEs that start with 'Setup' are correct. You may also want to go into the 'Trains' section as some maps require certain engines. I'll load up those maps you have loaded and look them over.

Moved all my maps and data and loaded what you have. Before I did anything else I went into Wiki and downloaded and installed all the Train files. They may not be needed, but just to be safe......
Alaska and BC Gold seem to be Ok.
Mid East causes a minor problem which can be repaired with Wordpad, Notepad++ if you have it. Go into C:\Documents and Settings\(whatever)\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads!\CustomAssets\XML and open RRT_Industries.xml. You'll be looking for 'Iron Mill', which can be found with Search. In it you'll find this:
<bIsCoastal>0</bIsCoastal>
<bIsMountainous>0</bIsMountainous>
<bInCity>0</bInCity>
<bInForests>1</bInForests>
<iCost>500000</iCost>
Change the 0 in <bInCity>0</bInCity> to a 1 and change the 1 in <bInForests>1</bInForests> to a 0.
Yes, there are other ways to deal with it, but this is the simple way. This was found and is noted in the thread, but you have to read it all to find it. I'm going to note this in the Setup post. There is also a problem of the icon for the Iron Ore when loading, but I do believe some other map deals with that. I'll make note when I find it.
Sudamerica and SpainDefinitive seem to have everything needed, along with alot that is not. Certain Goods in the list are not on the map, and there may be Industries that are not accessable as the game only allows 12 to be on the Auction Block. I haven't done any editing of these two yet.
The only thing to watch for in Valencia is the lone Oil Well out in the sea. Tomas is asking about a Port and Distribution Point, and the Oil coming in that way would not be a bad idea.
Well, edit and play away.
If you have no other maps loaded, I may be able to upload the XML if you don't want to edit it yourself. I'll do a zip of it and hold it just in case.

Well, thanks again, you have been more than generous with your help.
The only extra train I had to get (according to the Hawaii setup file) was a GP-7 by Eilelwelnkjhfaufrdxovs (or whatever the name is). Finding things buried in 10-page forum threads is a PITA if you don't mind me saying. Is there no Wiki page with installers for trains in the same way as for maps? It would be a good idea I think. Anyway, I hope I got the right file, but time will tell.
Just give me a bit of time to come to grips with what I have now. I'm reluctant to get into editing, unless it's absolutely vital, and even then I'd rather wait until a 'professionally' fixed version of a map comes out on the Wiki.
OK, time to leave the station...
- Cheers

The site for map download is here:
http://www.hookedgamers.com/wiki/Sid_Me ... ustom_maps
That's all of them except for 2 I think. There may be a third, I'm not quite sure.
As for XML editing, the repairs can be done with simple Wordpad, open, search, edit and save. If you're leary about it, make a backup copy, or upload your copy and I or someone else can edit it for you. Been there, done that.
