Post by tomasvicente38 » Thu Mar 22, 2007 11:33 pm

As the publisher of maps can be modified to be able to make maps of user of 16x16, 17x17, 18x18, 19x19 y 20x20.

I doubt the Terrain Editor can be modified. If I can get around to it I'll make some templates for those sizes. I think I already have a couple. The Terrain Editor can modify them but it cannot create those sizes. I'll post the templates and then you can just put a copy in the UserMaps folder and Load them into the Terrain Editor.

Okay, sorry for the delay but it was my last day at work cuz they're closing down that location and it was pretty much chaos.

I'm just providing the TGA images since you'll want to create a map with your desired Scenario name and renaming a bunch of template XMLs is silly.

To create oversized maps using these template images:
1. Launch SMR and create a new map in the Terrain Editor of any size with your desired Scenario name. We'll use New_Map as our example Scenario name.
2. When Terrain Editor appears with your new map just click the floppy disk button to save this 'base map' and close SMR.
Now we need to swap in our TGA Template file.
3. Find the the TGA template image you want to use from the attached archive (we'll use map_18x18.tga as our example) and Copy & Paste it to the folder of the new map you just created in SMR. The default for our example would be C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meiers Railroads!\UserMaps\New_Map
4. Select (single-click) the Terrain Editor .tga file (map_New_Map.tga), hit F2 and Copy (Ctrl-C) the filename. Now delete that file.
5. Select the TGA Template image file (map_18x18.tga), hit F2 and Paste (Ctrl-V) the new filename.
The last step is to change the map size in the Scenario XML file.
6. Edit the Scenario XML file (RRT_Scenario_User_New_Map.xml), find the <MapSize>10</MapSize> tags and change the number in between them to the size of your chosen map. Our example would 18 (<MapSize>18</MapSize>)

Now you can launch SMR, select Terrain Editor and Load a saved map. So far Terrain Editor has not had any trouble editing and saving oversized maps I've created.

I have followed the steps that you have given me with a map of 18x18 and one crashes against the writing-desk. Your you have proven it with a real map?

Hi Tomas,

I was able to create 20x20 map from Dr. Frag's template by following his instructions without any problems.

I have edited the terrain a little bit and played with it for 2-3 hours and everything worked just fine. Memory usage when playing was around 900 MB.

Try if it will work on your computer.

You would be so amiable to explain it step by step to me. I use photoshop. In my map you see some failure? Thanks.
I have proven your map and works perfectly in my computer.

Hi again,

it is easy, you forgot to set the map size in your RRT_Scenario_User_Patagonia.xml file.

You need to make sure it contains this:

<IndustriesXMLFile>RRT_Industries_Patagonia.xml</IndustriesXMLFile>
<DepotsXMLFile>RRT_Depots_Blank.xml</DepotsXMLFile>

<MapSize>16</MapSize>
<Eras>
<Era>

Thanx universum, been editing locos all day.

To answer some questions:
1. I have made several oversized maps this way for testing and the Terrain Editor loads, modifies, and saves them fine. And the game hasn't had much trouble with them either except for memory usage & performanse issues which are understanable.
2. To make the MiniMap just load your map into the Terrain Editor and Save it. This will create the new map_<scenarioname>_thumbnail.dds file.
3. You don't need to do anything in Photoshop to use these. It's just a matter of swapping out image files and changing the MapSize in the RRT_Scenario_User_<scenarioname>.xml file.

Hope you got it all working now.
Looking forward to your new maps.
