The Nameless City problem

Post by Cage » Thu Mar 22, 2007 11:18 pm

Ok, I did try searching but did not find this particular problem mentioned. I just tried creating my first map in the in-game editor, added the cities, then used the Scenario Manager to fix trains and city types and a few things. I can run the scenario, but get a CTD after a matter of minutes. It normally isn't quite that bad.

Also, every time I start the scenario, I get a new city, named "The Nameless City", apparently randomly placed on the map. This also happens every time I load the map in the editor. If I delete it in the editor and save the map it still pops up again when reloading or running the scenario. It isn't there in the XML files or the Scenario Manager. It happens both the the ME-created scenario (attached) and the SM-created one.

Any idea what I did wrong here...?

Strange, I can't find anything wrong with these. Just for grins I cleaned them up in Notepad++. I did this once with another Scenario and it didn't crash afterwards. If no one else chimes in I'll test it when I get home.

I didn't get the CTD now, but The Nameless City is still there. What do you mean by cleaning it up...?

Change this:
<DepotsXMLFile>RRT_Depots_Blank.xml</DepotsXMLFile>
to this:
<DepotsXMLFile>RRT_Depots.xml</DepotsXMLFile>
in the RRT_Scenario_User_Test.xml file.

To clean up the XML files I just made the formatting uniform throughout all the files.

I just waent in and put the map in the Editor and go ride of the default city, placed the new map into the Test folder along with the RRT_Cities_Test.xml and RRT_Names_Test.xml. I then went thru and entered all the cities and their names, and no roaming city, The RRT_Depots_Blank.xml is still there along with the reference to it in the Scenario XML.

Could that roaming city have been the default ghosting? Did you delete or rename it Cage?

I'll try it.

I assume it is the default city... The first thing I did when starting the map was to delete it. Once I noticed the bug, I also used the map editor to delete one of the other cities and replace it with TNC renamed, which didn't work.

That at least didn't work.

But once I edit it a bit in the Scenario Manager, it starts crashing again seconds after I start it :(

I've tried it with another scenario as well, this time I didn't delete the default city but just changed the name, and I didn't get the Nameless bug. But it still keeps crashing after I used SM on it. Is it even supposed to work as-is, or are you expected to go through the XML files and "clean them up" afterwards? I simply have no idea what to look for...

Scenario Manager(Mangler? ;p) is a little old and I don't think it's up to current standards for SMR file building.

It's OK for maps that don't use any material created after it was made. Your best bet is to take working maps apart and play with them. Since we now have Installers for all the maps, if you mess it, just delete it and reinstall it.

Material created after it was made... like the map editor? Because I don't use anything else out of the ordinary (patches and Santa).

I tried the XML marker which didn't find anything. Going through XML files manually doesn't sound like much fun, especially when I don't know what I'm looking for. I think I'll find another game, but thanks for the help anyway :)

If I can ever get anything to work, I'd post it.

I managed to get a bit further. Now I can actually play for a while before it crashes. I noticed that, if I reload (when I can reload, half the time the savegames get corrupted so it hangs during loading) it sometimes doesn't crash and I get one of these random newspaper events instead. I noticed this more than once. So there appears to be some events that make the game crash on this particular scenario. Seen anything similar before? Is it that you have to create your own events XML and remove anything that uses resources the scenario doesn't?

Yes, that's the best way. You can even change the events to match your map. I have somewhere a MID_EAST map with events that reflect the Mid East scheme.
