Very easy to test both compression methods. RAR is by far faster and has much better compression. Winrar is a great app that also handles zip files.

That is incorrect. Winrar does not cost anything. The trial software works forever. You can however register to show support for the product and get rid of the ok button. Pkware was great in it's time but it's been obsolete for many years now. Winrar is a tiny program that handles many formats and has some of the best features combined with speed and compression. You don't see people making volumes of DVD with pkzip. They use rar and for a reason This forum is quite nice how it handles file attachments.

Doesn't really matter what you use as long as it handles all formats Only time I use zip is to uncompress. I've used Winrar for years though to compress stuff especially larger files that have to be broken down into volumes. The trial does say it exipres but it never stops working. Does 7-zip handle rar files also? Maybe I'll give it a go

7-zip compression is even better than rar. And it supports multi-volume spanning, something I needed when releasing the Basin And Range map.
