No Midas Touch

Hello
I bought "SMR" last weekend, having tried a couple of the previous "RT" games in the past and finding them a little too dry. By the looks of things this was a good decision, as already I've sat hooked through a couple of longish sessions and generally I'm not someone with a long "sit down in one place" threshold, so I'm very pleased.
I have what is probably a silly problem though and I'm sure the answer must be staring me right in the face.. but I just can't see it and so to avoid strangling my new gaming find with the barbed rope of early ineptitude, I'm going to risk looking silly and just ask you the question.
In the first scenario I am asked to connect three cities, which from memory are "Phoenix", "Las Vegas" and "Flagstaff". (not sitting in front of the game right now so can't double check.) I've managed to do this and so fulfilled the first victory condition, but there is a second one which frustrates all my efforts.
I have to "ship five cars of gold" to give myself some spending money and try as I might I can't seem to satisfy this victory condition.
I've shipped gold across the map to various combinations of towns, including a route which runs through all the target towns for the first goal, starting in Phoenix and finishing in Flagstaff. But although I can physically see the gold moving from place to place, the game stubbornly insists I'm not shipping any.
The last thing I tried was buying the smelting place in Phoenix in case I had to own that before I could be classed as having shipped the gold. It seemed unlikely as it doesn't seem to be the case with any other commodities, but I thought it was worth a go. Didn't work though obviously.
So dear experts.. what is the blindingly obvious mistake your Badger is making?
Many thanks
Badger
