No Midas Touch

Post by RailBadger » Thu Apr 16, 2009 9:11 am

Hello

I bought "SMR" last weekend, having tried a couple of the previous "RT" games in the past and finding them a little too dry. By the looks of things this was a good decision, as already I've sat hooked through a couple of longish sessions and generally I'm not someone with a long "sit down in one place" threshold, so I'm very pleased.

I have what is probably a silly problem though and I'm sure the answer must be staring me right in the face.. but I just can't see it and so to avoid strangling my new gaming find with the barbed rope of early ineptitude, I'm going to risk looking silly and just ask you the question.

In the first scenario I am asked to connect three cities, which from memory are "Phoenix", "Las Vegas" and "Flagstaff". (not sitting in front of the game right now so can't double check.) I've managed to do this and so fulfilled the first victory condition, but there is a second one which frustrates all my efforts.

I have to "ship five cars of gold" to give myself some spending money and try as I might I can't seem to satisfy this victory condition.

I've shipped gold across the map to various combinations of towns, including a route which runs through all the target towns for the first goal, starting in Phoenix and finishing in Flagstaff. But although I can physically see the gold moving from place to place, the game stubbornly insists I'm not shipping any.

The last thing I tried was buying the smelting place in Phoenix in case I had to own that before I could be classed as having shipped the gold. It seemed unlikely as it doesn't seem to be the case with any other commodities, but I thought it was worth a go. Didn't work though obviously.

So dear experts.. what is the blindingly obvious mistake your Badger is making?

Many thanks

Badger

Hi Badger,
I think this might be the real answer to your problem:
Gold only counts as shipped when it is delivered AND unloaded at a town or city that demands gold. Just taking it somewhere is not enough, it has to be delivered where it is wanted. Mouseover or click on a city to see it's input & output, or use the goods tab on top of the minimap & click on gold. Every game, the gold cities may be different.
Gold Luck,
Keo

And it's always a good idea to start with the basics:
Install SMR
Patch with 1.10 patch (http://www.2kgames.com/railroads/railroads.html)
Main Screen will show the following in lower left corner: Version 1.1.0.0 (61414)
This 1 patch is the only thing you need to add to SMR, right now. Later on, if you have certain problems there may be other things that will help.

I wasn't taking it anywhere that was asking for it........ D'OH!!!!!

Thanks keotaman, I knew it was staring me right in the face.

PS: Already all patched up thanks. In this day and age of Joe Public more often than not engaged as unpaid product tester for games companies who release unfinished or buggy games, frankly I always check for a latest patch on a title before I even bother to install it.

I just wanted to add: Demand is mostly general depending on the SIZE of the city. Gold is one of the general items demanded and I believe a metropolis is required. San Diego is one of the metropoli, so it would accept gold. My point here was that you can also always MAKE a city grow into a metropolis to achieve your goals. The best way to do this is to ship goods into it that it demands, then also to ADD (build) industries for resources that are near the town/city/whatever. Hope that helps!

Also, by "general" I mean goods that are not industry dependent. Like only a city with hospitals demands medicine, so medicine is not a general good. But all cities (as opposed to towns and villages) demand textiles, so that one is NOT industry specific and rather it is "general". Gold is general in that way in that all metropoli demand gold.
