One possible speed problem may be alot of little programs running in the background. I spend alot of time on the internet and that ether jungle likes to put stuff onto my system. Even firewalls can't stop all of it. Spy programs and ad programs ride on downloads. I've found that running two programs called 'Search and Destroy' by Spybot and 'Ad-Aware SE' by Lavasoft help with a sluggish system. I use them to weed out 20 to 40 programs a week. Best of all, thier free!
A site called 'Tweakguide' also has ways to speed up systems and some games.
I hope this info helps some of you out there.

Some safer surfing practices, and you wouldn't have 20-40 infections a week.
If you're installing/uninstalling lots of freeware that's coming up spyware-laden, try using a site like
www.snapfiles.com - they point out (where they know) whether or not an application is clean.
Currently I'm running F-Prot antivirus, and a hardware router/firewall, and I seem to be coming up clean, even when I do bother to install/run a spyware scanner.

What the programs find are not virus's, I have less than 1 of those a month try to jump my system and AVG software constantly watches for and blocks those. It's the spyware and adware that slow a system down, and those can get to your system from just visiting a site.
Look at the following sites for more info:

Forgive me for seeming like an ignorant t**t, but I did indeed know what Adware and Spyware are. I also know from past experience that
the bulk of *performance affecting* malware is installed along with "free" software (DiVX Codec, Flashget, more), rather than being installed by
reputable sites.
A scan with the applications you reccomended turned up squat on my machines, much as I suspected. Once again i feel a lot of this is down to safe surfing practices.
And for the record, my first computer was a Tandy MC-10, so I've seen the evolution of the computer as well as the computer virus.
-----------
MC-10 > Coleco Adam > Amiga 500 > Amiga 2000 (x2) > PC
