You have to use 1.1, it is the only stable version and includes stuff the maps expect to be there.

What kind of crashes are you getting when you use 1.1? We can try and fix those and you should be all good then.

FAQ question #1:
1.
My map crashes! What shall I do about it?
It is difficult to establish what causes your, or as a matter of fact, anybody's crashes.
I suggest that you clean up your installation.

Without knowing more of your installation, here are some steps that you can take.
Have the latest graphic drivers, etc.
Install patch 1.10. Nothing else!
Do not install Firaxis' Holiday scenario, if you had it, remove it completely.
Delete the directory C:/My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Railroads! directory completely.
Start the game. It will automatically create a new clean C:/My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Railroads! Directory
That will take care most of the crashes.

Basically it tells windows that smr is able to use more than 2GB of RAM. It tends to work magic, for instance Rodea's new map was crashing on start-up until I patched my railraods.exe.

More about the 3GB enabler and a download here.

No killing here, only slow strangling.

I don't have Vista any more, but if I remember it right, Service pack #2 took care of the problem. It needs a little more research!
