Trouble loading maps??? Read this.

You are the man. I just checked your post on the second page about RevampedSanta map. I checked the txt file in the zip. It is almost clear to me where certain files should be
Correct me if I am wrong:
1.)
In my CustomAssets\XML\ directory there should be RTT_Trains.XML, RRT_TrainCars.xml, RTT_Goods.XML & RTT_Industries.XML (these files are referred as Global XML files)
In all of these files there should be every train, good, industry and traincar used by any custom map in CustomAssets\XML\_SCENARIOS_
I also noticed that i still have RTT_Trains and RTT_Goods in the santa directory and they should be removed??
2.) The files mentioned above in the actual directory where the game is installed --> drive E for me, under \Assets\XML shouldn't be changed at all
Unfortunally I am still at work, but will be at home in a couple of hours and I will immediately correct my santa directory (remove the trains & goods files) to see if it helps.
I am slowly understanding the XML files (i have to ask for a raise 'couse i'm figuring this out at work )
3.) I also have problems with some other maps -- CTD (Italy, Spain which are great by the way) but I suspect that there is a problem in my Global XML's (CTD happen in a specific period at specific time - like a new loco should be available but can not load)
4.) If possible, can anybody upload the latest Global XML mentioned above so I could have complete files in my \CustomAssets\XML folder
THX to all of you guys who take the time to make SMR a playable game that it is and thx for all the help so far

1) you have the correct files as Globals. Yes, that is what they should contain. You might want to keep a list of the item added as this will help you see if an item needed in any new maps needs to be entered. Either a TXT of your own or add lines starting at least 3 lines down using this:
<!-- Whatever Item --->
And yes, remove those 2 files and run the map to ok it.
2) No, I wouldn't change them myself, tho some are experimenting with them.
3 & 4) If you go to Technical Issues there is a tutorial on the setting up and adding to Globals. Attached is a set of Globals as they are for the maps at the time of this posting. That post also has a program to look over the XML files.
If anyone else is going to download these, check the date here and then any maps you have downloaded. Any after this date may not be covered.
P.S., Give choobacca most of the credit as this is his brainstorm, I just spent my freetime and very late nights working on it.

I can't find anything in CustomAssets ( it's empty).choobacca wrote:
So here is the system I use:
Almost all problems related to a map that CTDs before it loads is related to the XML files in your CustomAssets\XML directory tree. Of course you also need access to the .nif, .kfm, .tga, etc. files that the XML references.
I have all kinds of maps "installed" in my CustomAssets\XML\_SCENARIOS_ directory, and they all load fine as long as I stick to the following file structure:
CustomAssets directory
<necessary .FPK files>
I can't find anything in CustomAssets ( it's empty).
Where can i find the .FPK files?
Where can i find the .FPK files?
In Assets i have xml files but in the _SCENARIOS_directory there's no CustomMap1 or 2, only germany , France etc..
I can use some help here.Thank you!!
In order to find those you have to download a Setup ZIP file for one of the maps here on this forum and install it. After you do that you will be able to play the map and you will find the folders and files you're looking for.
Be sure it is a Setup_(map name)_(version #).zip file such as Setup_Australia_1.0.zip.
And Welcome to the forum, I hope we can all help you to enjoy this game!

The installer should cause a dialog box to come up if the path is invalid, like a "do you want to create directory XYZ" or similar...snoopy55 wrote:Atani - I have not used a different location for installing maps, so I'm not sure on this: don't you have to put in the full address from the drive letter? If he uses "My Games\Railroads\CustomAssets\XML\_SCENARIOS_" as he states, won't the installer revert to the 'standard' one since what he put in doesn't exist as far as the installer sees it?
Provided that he enters a valid path to the CustomAssets folder it should use that path and not revert it to another path. Since he gave a couple maps which show this issue I will compare those maps with others and see what I can come up with..

Re: Installer puts files in wrong directory
I reviewed the installer files and it certainly seems that they will do the wrong thing if you modify the paths for the install. I am going to check the NSIS docs for how to fix this properly and will release new installers soon which can fix this. I will also add some code to try and find the proper "CustomAssets" folder automatically via the shortcuts created in the SMR Program Files directory.Taronas wrote: stormfathers America and Germany

hi,
Just for clarification:
I just wanted to show the "important" part of the installation folder and omitted the first part. Of course, the complete path is "F:\My_Data\My Games\Railroads\CustomAssets" ("F:\My_Data" equals "My Documents" - I moved my "documents and settings" from C:\ to a different partition)
Also, I do have Railroads installed in a custom location "E:\Railroads". That seems to be the reason that the "My games" folder is also called just "Railroads"
thanks for looking into this!

This is the same problem I've had since my install location is C:\Games\Railroads! thus putting my CustomAssets folder into C:\Documents and Settings\Dr Frag\My Documents\My Games\Railroads!. I have used 7-Zip to open the installers and manaully add custom content but that's getting to be a pain with all the add-ons I have loaded now.
But there is a way around it. Just rename your user data folder to Sid Meier's Railroads! and do the install. Then rename it back to the game install name.
This also works wonders if you want to test other content. Just rename your precious user data folder to something SMR won't care about and proceed with your testing. Then rename them when you want to use another user data folder. Make as many user data folders as you want to keep content seperate. It's easy to start fresh with SMR without reinstalling. Just rename the user data folder and SMR will create a fresh set of user data folders.
