Instead of using Gimp and a .dds converter use http://www.getpaint.net/redirect/wp/index.html You can open a dds file and save it as a .dds file using paint.net. Gimp can't open a .dds and needs the file to be changed to a .png by the .dds converter.

BN, I don't know what version of GIMP you are using, or what you have been told, but I have been using it since shortly after I got into this game and have never had to convert a DDS to a PNG to edit it in GIMP. I don't even know what a PNG is, tho GIMP does have it listed. GIMP handles just short of 50 different files types, and DDS IS one of them.

The only reason DDS converter was even mentioned in that post was for people who had a graphics program which could not handle DDS.

GIMP was what allowed me to make the shadow DDSs that I use for creating the different Engines I do so I don't lose all the details.

And it allows you to do a lot while staying simple to use.

I couldn't get a .dds into gimp so I used .dds converter2 then .dds converter2 stopped working and I got Paint.net. If you can get a dds into gimp then use gimp. Gimp is a great tool to have.

The DDS converter is a plug-in for Gimp. You have to go to the Gimp site, find it and download it in the Gimp plug-in folder.

My error and my apologies. Tijer said that it was a download also, so I rechecked all 7 of my hard drives used for SMR and found the patch. As I said, I've been using this since I first started messing with this game and had no reason to remember the details of a one-time operation. Attached is the file.

I should post a blank skin of the GP38-2. Sorry, I don't have any other blanks. I painted over the GP7 blank again.

Always keep a set of blanks in a folder called "Blanks for all engines", and when you want to do a new engine, make a folder like "Sacramento Northeern 711" to work in. Copy the blanks to it and go for it.

Is there some reason for posting that here on this thread? Just wondering........

He is going to paint a train car, engine or something and I thought a blank might be useful.

Snoopy....BN is right
I never use GIMP and only use Pain.Net, if you use GIMP you need plugin in order to can read DDS file, but if you use Pain.Net you not need that plugin. With Pain.Net you not need anything program as like DDS Converter, TGA Converter etc, because Pain.Net provided what you alls needed for edit texture for this game

BN, sounds good, i was just wondering.

Rodea, the plug in is a once only thing (like 20 months ago for me) and I feel easy about using GIMP.

Hey, to each his own, right?

i think i have misled a bit, i have edited a few of my trains skins, but what i am actually attempting to do is change the appearance of the freight cars, (milk, oil, commodities, etc) however i cannot seem to find the proper files to alter, i was trying to change my commodities cars to look somethiong like that of an actial local ohio railways cars, such as these, perhaps i am getting in a bot over my head i have no idea about modeling, and i haven't reallly skinend anything either, my main interest is making the maps, which i have started on and it doesnt look too shabby, however i am now in search of how to edit the events file, and mission goals
