My Take on the game's issues

Post by jayo » Tue Jun 17, 2008 7:11 pm

Since SMR came out, some have criticized some of the aspects of the game as inferior to the previous installments. I rather like the game's aspects and support them. I just thought I'd give my feelings on the variously criticized aspects:

-Train routing: I feel it is better that the train can just go to lesser crowded lines rather than being forced to go one way on one track, and I like getting engines side by side! Also, you can now have 4-track stations!

-camera angle: I'll admit, this could be a bit better, but it lets me see my loco's resonably close-up so I'm happy!

-economic system- Never really bothered much with this in the other games, and as the title suggests, the game is more geared towards building a railroad that satisfies needs of the towns.

-Lack of Tenders/fueling/overhead wires: Think of these as a good thing. The Original RRT did not require you to refuel the engines or add overhead wires, just had to pay more for maintanance. Think of them as just an extra burden. Maybe it makes it less realistic, but hey, it's a game!
As for tenders, since there's no refueling, it's an unnecessary extra car. As such, they may have shelved them so as to focus on more important aspects of the game.

-Artwork: Some don't like the colorful, cartoony look of the game. It makes the game more original, showing they really put effort into the game.

Graphics- Engines look more realistic, have swiveling bogies, people at the station, drivers in locos, animated loading. You have to admit, it is an improvement in that respect.

Where was I? Ah yes!

-Cars being cargo from 1830, etc.: I rather like that! It's quite humorous really!

-No restaurants, post offices, etc.: Made the terminals in the other games seem like warehouses! The larger SMR stations have these inside them, which accounts for the station upgrade's +25% or whatever in passenger revenue and what-not. Sweet!

-crashes, lack of updates: These are a bit of an issue, especially on Vista, which I have. But I've added the Vista hotfix and upgraded my drivers, and I've avoided doing too bizarre track/station configurations and have had minimal issues.
For updates, given, they've been really busy on other things. They probably released v1.1 as it was knowing this, so to keep us more occupied. Firaxis still owns the game, Sid hasn't left them, these are games that "stand the test of time" so all we can do is wait...

-Train table mode: And you thought SMR was a disappointment! You guys are so funny!
