How about a NEC map?

Post by railways » Sun Dec 16, 2007 6:43 pm

Why dont we make a NEC map?It would be very intresting if we could add a few more engines(like the acela HH8-p or the F-40)not to mention a load of towns on the way.IT would be amazing.

I am thinking its North East Corridor.

Washington DC to New York City, perhaps all the way up to Boston.

The NEC is basically the "Northeast U.S." map in the one shipped with the game.

So if you're correct, take the Northeast US map and change the cities in it leaving the rest as is, or doing a larger version of the same map with more to it..... interesting............ 8) .....how 'bout it Railways?

No not really,I finf the current northeast map to be,quite frankley crappy. Now Since i personally live right next to the tracks and seen it all i DEMAND more detail. It simpley is not good enough for me.There are many types of well known engines(gensis, acela HH8-P)That could be modeled into SMR.And It has to at least include boston, the map in SMR did not get the memo apperantly.:P

As to engines, if you don't do it, there is only a chance someone else will, unless they look alot like existing engines.
As to the map, take the editor, call up that map, add in the existing cities, and add in the others you want. There is now a better selection of Goods and Industries that before too.
We're all drooling impatiently :P :P :P

Not gonna get it! SMRR is symbolic, not-to-scale, with emphasis on the Tycoon aspects (marketing, shipping, planning), maps are too small & models are too large for full realism.
For detail, you need a simulator, such as MSTS, with the emphasis on real-time running, accuracy, controls.

It's apples & oranges, you pays your money & takes your choice.
I like both, for completely different reasons. And I not only live by the NEC, I've run on it, too.

That said, it would be fun to have a new NEC, on a bigger map, reaching DC to Boston, with the Pennsy, Reading, NYCentral, NewHaven and/or other appropriate equipment.

Hmmm.

In some aspects it could be done. In others it cant. Certainly I see no reason wh... scratch that. Unless you deform the map, remember that the coastline in the NEC curves rather significanly between new York and Boston, which pretty much would result in a large area of the map being useless water, or deformed to the point of being no better than what we presently have.

At any rate, when one has a great 'idea' like this, rather than demanding someone else make it, this is usually one's push into the moding world.

IE, learn the tools just like everyone else here has and make it yourself. You'll get a lot more respect that way, for one.

As to water, look at Florida, Australia and a few others. the Mexico map I'm working on has a lot of water also. Sometimes you can't get away from it..... :?

I'm sure your right, Snoop. It just kinda rubs me the wrong way, thats all.

Anyway, here is an overview map I was able to crib outa the USGS free visualization tools. washington is in the lower right, boston in the upper left.

Note we're looking at something twice as wide as it is long.

Image

certainly it could be done with a 20x20 map, and a bit of vertical distortion to make it square; I'm just not certain it would come out any better looking overall than the existing NE US map as far as fidelity, which seems to be this gent's main beef.

Are we sure that the maps have to be square. I do recall that some one was working on a short but wide map, although you do have to force feed the dimensions, like 18x24 or something. Another search into the archives of HOR.

well, if there is a way, its NOT mentioned in the Wiki... it just has a single reference to mapsize that implies a square map.

You could always square it off by going down a bit and up for the rest of the needed area. Just don't put a lot of (or any) cities in the added northern area, leave it for a few Annexes. And if you get Lake Ontario in there, put in a Port.....
