Completely new install of the game

Post by klemc » Thu Sep 25, 2008 12:01 pm

Hello guys,

Its been a while since my last confession :D

Sorry if the topic is in the wrong room, mods please move it to the correct place if so.

I have not played this game for a very long time and I have a question for U?
I would like to make a fresh install of the game and patch it with the latest patch. What are the necessary things I need to do next so most of the user maps/trains would work.

I hope I made myself clear.

THX,

Klemc

Welcome back, klemc! There has never been a better time to get restarted in SMR, with stable standalone maps (SAM and CIC) now widely available.
I provided some very detailed, but I hope, simple and straightforward tips for a clean install here and here

Let me know if these posts are sufficient (and don't get distracted by the comments of theOddOne, his problem was due to using a No-CD crack, once he decided to give it a shot with the CD loaded it worked fine for him.)

OK I finally got SMR installed and I patched it with the 1.10 patch.
Any other patches available or should be installed or is it enough to start copying the maps in UserMaps folder.

P.S.: Whats this SMRI I've been reading about.

Regards,

Klemc

patch 1.10 is all you need. Do avoid the Holiday Map by Firaxis.....

The SMRI was a set of 20 maps put together so they could be loaded at one time. It was kind of a rush job, trying to get it done by the 1st anniversery, and there were a few problems found with it. The one thing that has become a problem with it is that it uses GLOBALS. This is where all the needed information is kept in CustomAssets. There is no real problem with them as long as you do not load to many maps.

What has been created now are SAMs and CICs. These are a type of map in which you only have one at aa time loaded into your system. When you get tired of playing it, you delete it and its associated files, if any, and load in the next one you wish to play. Go to 'Mods - Maps' and open the post 'SAM style maps for downloading....' and you'll get an explanation of how to use the SAMs. The CIC instructions are in each thread for them.

snoopy55, that was a quick one :)

One more question. If I copy the SAM in my UserMap folder will the train file be present so all of the new trains will be available and what will be different if I use the installers of maps?

Klemc

EDIT: I will do what you wrote in 'SAM style maps for downloading....' and try it.

In order to put Engines into a SAM that are not part of it you have to download the Building Block for it and insert it into the maps RRT_Trains XML and put the FPK that goes with it into UserMaps. In this case, when you are done with the map you zip the map folder along with the original FKP(s) and the ones you added and store it somewhere on your system or burn it to a CD/DVD. You then have it with the Engines you added. If you go into 'Construction Set' you will find a 'Engines Are Us! by Building Blocks Are Us!' which has several Engine BBs in it. Burlington Northern has me working on about a dozen more, so they will be added over the next two weeks or so, plus ones I'm working on.......

If you have any problems, just ask and i'll see what i can work up as far as instructions.

If you want to delete a train from a map does the reverse of the above install procedure apply.

Thanks guys for the support.

OK, so I DL the BB_AC4400.zip file which contains Bb_ac4400.fpk and BB_AC4400.xml files. So if I understood correctly I need to put the *.fpk in the UserMaps folder with the map that I want to play (let's say free build) and the *.xml copyed in the RTT_trains.xml in the globals??

After that the train should be available in that map.

I'm still at work and I do not remember how the directory is structured, so bear with me.

Klemc

EDIT: I think I found my answer in Installing Building Blocks 101 by snoopy. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Mikeyc - In the case of removing an Engine, locate the one you want to remove and delete everything from <Train> to </Train>.

Klemc - Yes, you are correct as to that tutorial, but from the sound of your description, you are still using GLOBALS style. I'll go thru both ways just to make sure.

GLOBALS: Go thru RRT_Trains.xml in GLOBALS (CustomAssets/XML) and see if the Engine you want to add is there. If it is, open the maps RRT_Trains and go to the end of the file to find </RRTTrains>. Then add the following:

<Train>
<szName>TAG_NAME_AC4400</szName>
</Train>

That is based on the AC4400 of course. That is a basic change. You can make changes to other thing with each Engine, but that is for another lesson on another day.

SAMs: Open the maps RRTTrains XML and go to the bottom. The order of the Engines in these files makes no difference, the game accesses them by date. Copy the full BB from <Train> to </Train> (ignore the bottom section at this time) and paste it into the maps RRT_Trains XML just above the </RRTTrains> line. BE SURE you put it above it...I have come just short of pulling out my hair because this blind game could not see an Engine I added only to find I made that mistake!. Now open the RRT_Names xml for the map and see if there is a section that starts with <RRTTrains>. If not, copy the whole lower section of the BBs XML from <RRTTrains> to </RRTTrains> and insert it one line above </Names>. If there is, copy everything between <TextKey> and </TextKey> and paste that just above </RRTTrains>.

Of course you do a save after every change.

If there is any part of the above that make it more clearer as to how to do it, let me know what and where and I'll edit the other tutorial.
