Interesting.
The larger locos may make the cost up when you can retire two slower ones doing 2 parts of a make and ship route.
I will often continue to use moguls late in the game if it's just a feed factory route.

Re: Does preferred cargo type for an engine mean anything?
Unfortunately this is one of the faults I find with the game. However, I still enjoy it. The freight locos are way to fast. I think the way it should have worked like this: Passenger Locos: Fast with few cars, slowing rapidly as others are added. Affected greatly by steep hills. Freight locos: Slow ...
Re: Windows 7
Runs fine out of the box on win 7 64 bit RTM.
Runs fine out of the fox on vista 64 bit (no 2 gig memory problem).
Requires vista memory setting change where you increase user memory size to run on vista 32 bit (don't need to modify exe)
Will test on win 7 32 bit RTM shortly.

Re: To Autosave, or Not?
Auto save helped me out. I setup a new route one time and set a train to haul goods. The game would crash. I reloaded and I did the same thing and it crashed again. I then reloaded again and I setup the route and I waited 10 seconds before assigning a loco. It worked! I think it was a divide by zero...
Re: Bulldoze?
Here's some things I came across: When you lay track, if you hold the right mouse button down, you can change the curve of the track to smooth out those sharp turns. Leaving little bridges around can be useful. If you later need to run a track under it you can, just minus down a bit with the new tra...

Re: Do you alter the turns/month?
Yes I do it often. I like experiencing particular eras longer.
Try building an eastern empire with nothing but puffing billys (grasshoppers).
It also makes very challenging scenarios easier.

Wide screen laptop
The graphics on my DX10 laptop are sweet, but I do notice some oddities with train routing screens. The images about the route are chomped a bit.

I see it sometimes
It usually occurs when I've dramiticly altered the route. If the train is suck I delete and start over. It does clear up for me when it gets out of the station. One time I had the train dissappear. I pressed the dot key to cycle through trains and the screen jumped to the ocean! I just pressed the d...

Sorry to hear that
I've been able to fix my vista problems by following the info offered here. I've never expect AI to be as good as real people. I don't expect to much out of a game.... But hey, this games a ton of fun if you just don't count the rivets.

Contracts We all know you can buy industries (which are way too cheap in my opinion). Another option I like the idea of industry contracts. You buy the right to ship x number of goods from a supplier. Doesn't matter who supplies the raw materials. While the contract is good the # of goods at the loc...

There is somthing that keeps me playing. I think its the routing. The circle concept is new to me. I've always been an A.B.C type. I get mad at myself when I have a major route with lots of traffic and accidently connect a spur in such a way that all the traffic wants to run down the spur now. ARG! ...
