Try to change the video settings to "windows mode" or something like this... I don't remember the setting and my computer was broke at home. After this when the game work in window mode change again to normal mode. I think that the problem is related to some video cards. I tried with several drivers...

Now the next challenge is how to create new industries... I imported some nif files to 3ds but I don't understand yet the role of the bones... I think that it's possible to create the animations without bones... but really I don't known...

Maybe I wrong, but I think that the name of the nif file is present in the kfm file. In this case you need an hex editor... and filenames with the same length.
Correct me if I wrong, please.

For existing objects in Railroads you can rename all the files. After this you can edit the nif file and change the textures. The problem is that you cannot make a new KFM file with NifSkope. I don't understand exactly your changes... did you create a new texture (the .dds file) or modified an old one? In the last case, you need to change the name of the texture in the nif file, you can make this with nifskope. I'm working in the second part of the tutorial to create new textures... mayb...
