The $7k figure is for a minimal run between two nearby cities I think, or one 'segment' of passenger distance. I'd like to see a screenshot of a train with more than 8 cars. I would think that the game's authors would now allow that to happen as a matter of fairness...unless it was documented as a feature, and I don't recall that being mentioned in the docs. I was able to do this without the very labor intensive 'deleting trains' thing. Interesting AI behavior and economics with 3 AIs in game
Since my Internet connection is flaky, I haven't been able to play online, so I've been playing the AI alot. I was playing a multiplayer map, the rivers one based on the British economy.
