You can create plenty of new maps just using the stock model libraries and the game is happy to load them all because they are just that, stock. But multiple introduced content in UserMaps is a well known legacy problem with SMR.
I use the GOG release of the game and just placed the two maps you noted in your post into my UserMaps, and my version crashes too. They show up when selecting a map to play, but attempting a game with either will cause the game to crash.
Even the original version of the game (which I have) will still crash. Like I said, it’s a known thing about SMR.
So, the golden rule is generally just one map loaded in the UserMaps folder, at a time.
With the saved games, you do not need to delete them, ever. They are not scanned at any time. They will only fail to load if the map used for the game, when it was played, is not present in UserMaps as the engine will want to load the relative models registered inside the saved game.
I’m actually in the middle of engineering version 2 of my saved game editor and it might even be worth peeling off a ‘Send To’ app that can show details of a saved game, like what map was used. In fact I think I’ll do that later today.
