Nameless City........Again

Post by Pete » Sat Jan 27, 2007 10:00 pm

Hello all.
I did a reinstall of the game three weeks ago.
Installed the 1.10 patch.
All has been going fairly well.......some CTD, but mostly good.

Today I reinstalled the Santa scenerio. English version.

All the cities show as "The Nameless City."
Just in the Santa scenerio, all others are ok.
It worked ok before the reinstall but not now.
I have no mods installed, and have never used any editor.

I went through the earlier 3 page thread on the subject, but no one seems to have an answer; other then those that did editing.
I did a search of the ENU file and found no nameless cities.

Help!!

Thanks in advance
Pete

Maybe I can help, maybe I can't...... Go into the Santa folder and see if there is a folder called Names_ENU.xml. If not, reload the Holiday Scenario. If there is, go into \Sid Meier's Railroads!\Assets\Localization on your drive where the game is loaded. Create a folder here and move the Names_ENU.xml file into it. Now open the Santa file and copy the Names_ENU.xml that is there into the Localization folder. This file from the Santa contains all the original information plus the information needed by the Santa Scenario. If neither reloading the Holiday Scenario or replacing the Names file work, you've lost me  . Delete the Name_ENU.xml file and pull the original one out of the folder to where it was.

Good Luck

OK Snoopy help me out here

I thought i must be the onlyest one havin this prob.

You say
"Go into the Santa folder and see if there is a folder called Names_ENU.xml" I assume this means the santa folder in my docs ( is this correct ? )

you say
"go into \Sid Meier's Railroads!\Assets\Localization on your drive where the game is loaded. Create a folder here and move the Names_ENU.xml file into it." Whay should I call the new folder or does it matter ?

and now the part thats really confusin an old clown

you say

"Create a folder here and move the Names_ENU.xml file into it. Now open the Santa file and copy the Names_ENU.xml that is there into the Localization folder." If I moved the Names_ENU.xml file to the new folder how can I now " open the Santa file and copy the Names_ENU.xml that is there into the Localization folder" ?

Sorry to be so dense but old clowns drink alot

'Clowning around' again I see  No really, the hours I keep and the fact I've been doing this stuff since machine language was the only spoken language

The 'Santa folder' is the one you find by digging into here:

C:\Documents and Settings\me\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads!\CustomAssets\XML\_Scenarios_

Understand the 'me' will be different for you. This folder is part of what is created when you execute the 'Setup Railroads Holiday' in the Railroads_Holiday_Scenario.zip.

As to the folder you make, call it what you like or leave it as is, it's only temperary.

OK, for the last part  Open \Sid Meier's Railroads!\Assets\Localization. Create your folder here. Don't worry about the name. In this same location you will find a file called Names_ENU.xml. Move this file into the folder you created. This is done in case you have to or choose to put it back in it's original place. Now, open a new window (click on 'My Computer') and open the 'Santa' folder mentioned above. Move it into \Sid Meier's Railroads!\Assets\Localization.
If I moved the Names_ENU.xml file to the new folder how can I now " open the Santa file and copy the Names_ENU.xml that is there into the Localization folder" ?
In the 'Localization' folder is a file called 'Names_ENU.xml' which is the original file for the game. When they created the Holiday Scenario, instead of creating a RRT_Names_Santa.xml file they just rewrote the original Names file and added what they needed to it. What is being done above is putting the original Names file in a folder and replacing it with the new one they wrote. The addition of the Holiday Scenario has basicly created two files with the same name, which may or may not confuse the game. This game seems to do different things with different computers so, who knows what it's doing

If this doesn't work, speak up and I may have another thing to try.

And don't drink and play with your computer, you may kill it

Hi Snoopy
Ok......I follow what you are trying to do.
Replacing the Old ENU file, with the new one with the santa names.

I did it and I also still get nameless cities.

The puzzling thing is when I originally installed the game, I didn't let it go into "Program files/ yada yada........I put it in C:/ my Railroad.
When the Santa scenerio came out, I let it go where it wanted, and it worked fine.
When I did the reinstall I let the whole thing go to Program Files/fraxis/yada yada.
Everything works fine except the Santa nameless cities.

I'm going to be offline for the day.
Taking the unit in for 2 gigs of memory.

If you have any more thoughts, please fire away.

Thanks
Pete

I tried reprograming the Scenario in Santa with a RRT_Names_Santa.xml, but it failed. I don't run that map in my system, but I did load it for you two and played with the programing.

At the moment I'm lost

Santa Sceanrio Nameless City fix (Try 2)

Snoopy55,

There seem to be a number of ways to fix this problem, I've posted one version of a solution myself. However, seeing all the trouble people still seem to be having with editing the names_ENU.xml file has prompted me to play with getting the RRT_Names_Santa.xml solution you suggested working, and I think I've cracked it :)

Here are the steps for doing what I did :-

First, this only works if you have the latest patch V1.10 installed, so please make sure that your Railroads version is up to date.

Steps:

1. Locate the following folder :

"My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Railroads!\CustomAssets\XML\_SCENARIOS_\Santa"

In here you'll see a bunch of xml files beginning with RRT_

2. Edit the "RRT_Scenario_Santa.xml" file and add a new line, at line 14, between the
</AICharacters> line and <CityXMLFile>RRT_Cities_Santa.xml</CityXMLFile> lines, as in the following excerpt. (or just use the one in the zip file attached to this message that include the edit)

Code: Select all

	...
	</AICharacters>
<!-- Next single line added by Pog (03-Feb-2007) to point to new Names file-->
	<NamesXMLFile>RRT_Names_Santa.xml</NamesXMLFile>
	<CityXMLFile>RRT_Cities_Santa.xml</CityXMLFile>
	...
3. Copy the "RRT_Names_Santa.xml" file attached to this post, into this folder.

This file contains the following (in case you are interested or want to make it yourself)

RRT_Names_Santa.xml file

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="us-ascii"?>

The names for this sceanrio will now be taken from the RRT_Names_Santa.xml file instead of the Name_ENU.xml file.

This should work for all the lanaguage versions as well.

Anybody brave enough to give this a go (it works on my machine) please let me know how you get on.

PoG

Edit: second attempt at adding attachments, this time both files mentioned in this post, already edited.

Well.......We got good news and bad news.

The good......I did the editing and got the names to show up.

The bad........For some reason, it killed my memory. Like I had 1 K instead of 1 gig. Even after I rebooted, I couldn't load any other scenerios. They'd try and just drop back to desktop. Even after I removed your changes......same thing.
I did a complete reinstall, and even then, first 2 trys with the generic England, no memory and screwed up display.
Third time ok.

This game is so buggy, I'm not blaming your suggestions.......it just seems to have a mind of it's own.
Since I don't believe in Santa anyway, I think I'll just leave that scenerio out.
Appreciate your time in trying to help.
Thanks

Pete

The Santa map did play with some files, which is why I leave it out. Now if someone could rewrite it so it doesn't play with files, it might be good

Pete,

Mate, I'm sorry it didn't work for you, I really hope my edits weren't the cause of your new problems.

No.......I doubt it was your files.
Even with generic files, things work along fine for days........then BANG.

I like the game; going to keep at it, but I sure hope another fix shows up.
