4-8-4 Northern FEF-3

Post by wingsofphoenix » Mon May 31, 2010 5:20 pm

This is the first new train I made, and my best so far 8) .
Its the model of the famous Union Pacific Northern FEF-3 #844 (and #838 in Grayhound Paint)!

Specifications:
- available in 2 Paintings (Black and Grayhound)
- FEF Centipede Oil Tender
- realistic proportions (might be a good idea to use only on larger maps than 10x10  )
- Polygon Count: 5874 (Engine 4062, Tender 1812)

Version 1.3:<UPDATE>
- smooth engine and tender models
- added reverse rod to engine
- updated boiler texture
Version 1.1:
- fixed some texture errors
- finally added animation for the 2nd Smokestack
- couldnt get the bell workin with animations i had, so i made a new one for it.. (and after that i found out why it didnt work in the first place.. well, learned alot about animations during creating my own though  )
- all animation files are now included inside the _shared folder

Pictures:

northern_fef-3_grey.jpg
Credits:
The Animation for the Tender was made by Rodea2007 for his Bigboy Tender. I just changed the name of the .kfs to not make Rodea's Bigboy a requirement

Installation:
Extract the .zip and start the unpacked selfextracting archive from it (cant upload .exe  ) and follow the instructions of the included ReadMe. The Tender Animation is optional, only needed if not installed yet.

Custom Skins:
If you want the FEF #844 with Grayhound Paintsheme install the 4-8-4_Northern_FEF_844_grey.zip below. The Standard FEF Install is required for it to work!!

Notes:
The _shared folder contains the main files for both engines, the UP and UP grey Folders contains the specific files for each model, including the XML entries.

I hope you like it as much as i do, Enjoy

yeah i know, for the smokestack i have to put that effect into NiTextKeyExtraData where it fires the first smokestack right?, but unfortunately i dont have the .kf's the engine uses (for the GoldenState that is)..
its probably in one of the Trains0-2.fpk's in the installation directory, but i cant unpack them (shows no content).. seems somehow protected ( i can unpack any other .fpk thats not in the installation directory without any probs)

and the bell is just linked within the .kfm right? i tried that with the mikado bell, but it rotates around the z-axis not x-axis as it should be... dont know how to fix that, so i removed it

Am I wrong in assuming that the cutesy bells on some of the later SMR engines are not really prototypical, but were added just to have some additional "gee-whiz" bells and whistles in the game? I certainly would not miss them. :D

I just did that, and i understand now what you mean.. the position of the bell is set within each ENGINE .kf too
Well then i'm stuck here, but if someone can send me the .kf files of the GoldenState i can probably fix it, otherwise someone else has to do that

I just tried these two updated engines and they look really nice! I wasn't expecting them to look so good in the roundhouse, but they do!

Image

One question I do have - The speed of the engines is constantly the same whether it has 1 car or 8, would it be possible to adjust this?

Anyway, great work

well maybe its because it can pull passenger and mail only, most of the later trains have a straight line at the graph there (and i doubt that this loco would have any trouble with pulling max length passenger trains  ), i tried to adjust it so it bridge the gap between earlier steam and the upcoming diesels.

but if you still want to adjust that, edit the number in the following line in the Trains.xml:

Code: Select all

<Power>16</Power>
to
12 (decreased power with 8 passenger cars) or
10 (decreased power with 7 and more passenger cars)
and so on..

thanks that you like it

You can change in the “RRT_Trains.XML” file wether train should haul freight also by changing the “1” to “0” <PassengersAndMailOnly>1</PassengersAndMailOnly>

In the same file you can adjust these 3 lines. Freight trains have higher “Power”
<MaxSpeed>9</MaxSpeed>
<Speed0>6</Speed0>
<Power>37</Power>

The speed of the trains on the maps depends on the number of loaded TrainCars. The empty Traincars don’t affect the speed.

Here......4-8-4 Northern FEF with bell animated...(see to the pictures below)

Needs to reskin influence with 3ds max, then make 9 new KF files, they are

1. 4_8_4_FEF_all_unhidden.kf
2. 4_8_4_FEF_engine_layer_default.kf
3. 4_8_4_FEF_engine_layer_idle.kf
4. 4_8_4_FEF_engine_layer_run_bumpyfidget.kf
5. 4_8_4_FEF_engine_layer_run_normal.kf
6. 4_8_4_FEF_engine_layer_run_struggle.kf
7. 4_8_4_FEF_engine_layer_start.kf
8. 4_8_4_FEF_engine_layer_stop.kf
9. 4_8_4_FEF_bell_layer_bell.kf

I'm using KFM from 4-8-4_GS_2 so do not need to rename all KFs with connected to Wheels ..........
