American rail history

Hi all. Just wanting to ask a question? what year did rail arrive in the us also what company and what type of engine was used.As a uk member i know about english rail history but not much american rail history as i would like to make an historicaly accurate us map from the begining to modern day.Thanks :?

in North america i think 1720 by onstruction of the French fortress at Louisburg
by southern america i'am nut really sure

Thank you derailed for replying to my question.But i think that would be a problem in the game as the 1700s would be a problem to model.And with that run how would the ai handle it.I think i should of been more specific about the type of rail service.What year, which company, engine and what citys or towns where connected for passenger service. Thank you anyway :)

Well wikipedia says that the first railroad in the USA was Baltimore - Ellicots Mills (first part of Baltimore & Ohio Railroad) opened on Dec 28 1829.
