In a nut shell;
You should have at least a gig a RAM
A good sized static swap file
Minimal programs running in the background
Latest drivers for all hardware
Try using medium shaders

Hello - time to roll up your sleeves

Windows XP
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

1. Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance.
3. Click Advanced under Performance Options
3. Under Virtual memory click Change
4. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.

5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, and type a new paging file size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.

I have mine set to Initial 2048 and Max set to 2048

Everyone crashes. Single player is not so bad for me, but online my crash rate is about 1 out of every 4 games. Usually I crash right after game starts. And it's not just me, a lot of people CTD online. The good news is the game seems to be abandoned by the developers, so we are stuck with what we got. Ok, its not really good news :)

Good luck! Here it is Jan 4, 2008. I have used this game on 4 different computers, including a "$3500.00 GAMING" computer. I have gone through tech support on ALL computers. Your problem continues on ALL of them irregardless of the drivel that tech support dishes out. I downloaded the Microsoft hard fix etc. I have done it all. This is simply a game that had NO right to be released until the bugs were eliminated. I actually am organizing a class action suit for those of us who simply want our hard earned money back for a game NOT playable as advertised!
The real shame is that I LOVE this game. I love it more than any game I have played in my 60 years. Just sad all the way around for what is such an amazing product, IF it just "worked"......

I agree, though my problem is a bit different...

I've spent three months trying to built a working scenario, but now I have to say - enough....

Especially for SMR I upgraded my PC, I've spent a lot of money (much more than for the game itself), and nothing helped. Every scenario I was trying to built ended with CTD. Not because of wrong content, but it was always about
a memory problem. 2Gb is still too low ?

I play almost every map and I have only 1 gig. I get CTD's like everyone else and they are usually caused by a faulty or conflicting xml though I'm also aware that on occasion SMR just either runs itself out of memory or does some other stupid thing. There's been numerous threads on this subject and about as many fixes and things to try so don't give up. Even though it's a buggy game with many problems it's still well worth spending the time on to get to run.

I have a 2GB system and SMR rarely CTDs on me. And I've run all the big Scenarios. I take great care in keeping my system clean from unecessary extras and don't run anything in the background while gaming. I am a computer support specialist and most systems that I see are not as clean as people think they are nor are they as stable as they could be. I have been working with personal computers and electronics since the late 70s. I have a pretty good understanding of how these things work and I can assure you that stability is a combination of quality hardware and good software installation practices. I spend my money on well researched and reviewed components and always choose Custom Install during software installations so I, at least, know what's being installed and/or can choose only what I really need.

Now I'm not letting SMR off the hook here I just think that a lot of the problems people are having are really SMR showing a weakness in their systems rather than bad programming. SMR needs some work to help deal with these issues so more people can enjoy this great game but I feel the resposibility does not lie solely on SMRs head.

snoopy takes his soapbox, thanks the good Doc, and steps up..

As I've made note of on this forum before, run Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, with AVG anti-virus and AVG anti-spyware. All are free for home use. The AVG can be set to update and run on a schedule (mine runs every morning at 6:00) and it catches spyware as it comes in. The other two are manual upgrades and manual runs, unless you want to purchase them.
A lot of Email and programs you download leave little programs running in the background to report what you do with your machine. My brother loaded 3 Registry checkers onto my machine and even when I deleted them, every time I went onto the interent a window would pop up saying I had some number of Registry errors, buy our program and fix them. I knew it was bogis as every count was different. I ran the first two programs and got rid of them.
A second good program to try is FSAutoStart, which is also free. What this does is shuts down background programs, like anti-spyware and such, and other programs of your choice, and then loads up the game you choose. When you leave the game, it restarts what you had it shut off.
Video card control centers are also something that takes up memory. I shut mine down after settingg the card up, and the card is running fine.
Someone mentioned a 2048 Virtual Memory. I found a 9GB disk and attched it to my system and all I use it for is a 4096 VM. These maps can suck up to 1.7Gb of memory, and about 2/5 of that is VM on my system. I now have 2.5 GB of memory, and just read an artical which says XP can see 2 to 3.5 GB, depending on what is one the system. When I look at System Properties, I show 2.25GB.
Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and just see what is running on your system. And see what your system sees in GBs.

snoopy picks up his soapbox and walks of stage.....
I'm correct 97% of the time..... who cares about the other 4%....

Well, I am now on 4 Mg's RAM/Vista 32 etc. JUNK. Breaks my heart as i love this game enough to never buy any other game for YEARS. IF this would just run. Sad. Not to mention my NEVER buying ANY product with Sid Meier's name attached again.
